Dusty Baker’s future with Nationals shouldn’t depend on postseason results

After Game 1 of the National League Division Series, when the Cubs beat Washington in a tightrope duel that underscored just how thin the margin is between winning and losing, the local postgame radio show featured caller after caller blaming the manager, Dusty Baker, for not finding a way to win a game in which his team that scored 819 runs in the regular season generated a grand total of two hits and no runs.

“I need that. I need it. That makes me better,” Harden said. “And he’s the same way.”

The Nationals had a base open with Rizzo coming to the plate and pinch runner Leonys Martin on second, but manager Dusty Baker elected to pitch to the slugger with Willson Conteras on-deck. Oliver Perez came in and Rizzo looped his first pitch into shallow left-center, finding a patch of grass between three Washington fielders.

Rizzo stumbled after he took a big turn around first and was tagged out to end the inning, but he didn’t seem to care too much, demanding veneration as the Cubs came out of the dugout for the ninth.

Charles Sullivan, professor of law, Seton Hall University: “Where I think the players have a problem is there’s not really an adverse employment action if they are simply benched. They are still being paid, and I don’t think they necessarily have the right to play in games.”

He plans to make the most of every opportunity, starting Tuesday.tigers_053

For the purpose of this exercise, let’s say the Knicks select eighth again.

When I was about 9 years old, I joined a local bowling league for anyone 18 and under. Needless to say, it would have pointless for my team of fourth graders to attempt to compete with a squad of high-school juniors who frequently flirted with 300 games while we were still learning how to throw the ball down the lane without guttering 90 percent of the time. To counter this, most leagues include a “handicap” to help balance the matchup, based on each bowler’s prior average performance on the season.

That would leave them with $94.5 million in salary — or less than $7 million in cap space.

“We had isolated out a number of players that we were going to go scout and do work on,” Diamondback GM Mike Hazen said last week. “It came together over the course of about a week with Detroit. We set the lineup up how we had envisioned. I think he’s protected [Paul Goldschmidt] quite a bit.”

Part of the lore surrounding the Miami Heat landing LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade as free agents in the summer of 2010 was not only the great recruiting presentation that Pat Riley pulled off in South Beach but also the poor recruiting pitch that Derrick Rose executed on behalf of the Chicago Bulls.

Seven years later, with James, Wade and Rose set to take the court for the first time as teammates on the Cleveland Cavaliers in Tuesday’s preseason game against the Bulls (8 p.m. ET, ESPN), Rose revealed that he did try to lure James, Wade and Bosh to Chicago after all.

The banner went up and the home team came back to win in a thrilling finish. All in all, a perfect night for the Nashville Predators and their fans.

Filip Forsberg scored his second goal with 35.6 seconds left and the Predators rallied by scoring twice in the final 1:17 to beat the Philadelphia Flyers 6-5 on Tuesday for their first victory of the season.tigers_056

I don’t think it’s too much to assume this was a well-planned publicity stunt.

Watt, the three-time Defensive Player of the Year, was injured in the first quarter and the team announced that he sustained a tibial plateau fracture, but didn’t provide any details on how long he’ll be out. The defensive end returned this season after missing the last 13 games last year after his second back surgery.

The Texans cut their deficit when Watson threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Fuller in the third quarter. But the 2-point conversion failed, leaving them down 23-13.

Kansas City’s Charcandrick West caught two touchdown passes and Travis Kelce had eight receptions for 98 yards in the first half, but didn’t return after halftime and the team said he was being evaluated for a concussion.

Pence ensured that by announcing his first-quarter departure on Twitter. His reasoning: “(President Trump) and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem.”

Pence posted a few minutes later, “At a time when so many Americans are inspiring our nation with their courage, resolve, and resilience, now, more than ever, we should rally around our Flag and everything that unites us. While everyone is entitled to their own opinions, I don’t think it’s too much to ask NFL players to respect the Flag and our National Anthem.”

The Seahawks found a way to beat the upstart Rams on Sunday.

Taylor Lewan, OT, Tennessee Titans: Already missing starting quarterback Marcus Mariota in Week 5, the Titans lost starting left tackle Lewan during the first quarter. The team indicated at the time that Lewan has a knee injury and was questionable to return, and Dennis Kelly took his place in the lineup. Shortly thereafter, Lewan returned to the field before leaving again in the second quarter. After the game, the team indicated that Lewan will undergo an MRI when they return to Nashville.

Aaron Brewer, LS, Arizona Cardinals: The rough start to Sunday’s game against the Eagles was made worse as long-snapper Brewer departed for the locker room holding his left forearm with Arizona training staff. The Cardinals announced that he was doubtful to return, and he did not. After the game, the team announced that Brewer has a broken hand.

The Eagles are 4-1, two full games clear of the NFC East, after Aaron Rodgers ripped the Cowboys’ hearts out on their home field for the second time in 10 months. Philly’s only loss was to the Chiefs, who entered Sunday night’s game undefeated. The Eagles are 2-0 in the division, 3-0 in conference and sitting pretty. The 2-3 Cowboys have got to find a way to catch them. Washington is at 2-2, and it had the week off.

The Rams are never easy for the Seahawks, and Seattle has been ignoring the check engine light on its offense for a year and a half now. But it’s tied with Jared Goff & Co. at 3-2 now, one game ahead of sputtering Arizona, and who knows what’s to come in that NFC West race?x (13)

McCown, surprising Jets soar past winless Browns 17-14

McCown won only one game as a starter in two seasons with Cleveland, and that came in Baltimore. He went 0-7 at home for the Browns (0-5), who released him on Feb. 7 in a cost-cutting move. The 38-year-old wasn’t looking for payback, but he got it with two second-half scoring tosses.

Little was expected this season of the Jets (3-2), but they’ve become a shocking success story.

“We haven’t done anything,” coach Todd Bowles said. “We’ve won three games. By no means are we perfect. We’ve got to play a lot better to beat New England (next week) or anyone else.”

Kizer was understandably upset following the game.

“Frustrated for sure,” said the second-round pick, who has nine interceptions and a league-low 49.5 rating. “This is all new to me. Being 0-5 is new to me. This organization and this city deserves wins.”

Kizer stood on the sideline next to Jackson wearing a baseball cap and blank expression as Hogan completed five straight passes, including his scoring pass to Njoku, who snared the pass with a diving, one-handed grab.

Jackson said he’ll wait to watch the tape before making a decision on his quarterback for next week when the Browns visit Houston.x (7)

Source: Bucs LB Lavonte David has left ankle sprain, is week-to-week

Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Lavonte David has a medial left ankle sprain and will be week-to-week, a source told ESPN on Monday.

David was carted off the field late in the fourth quarter of the Bucs’ 34-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. X-rays were negative for fractures and the initial diagnosis was a more serious high ankle sprain. However, an MRI and further testing revealed it to be a medial sprain.

David, 27, was a first-team All-Pro in 2013 and played in the Pro Bowl after the 2015 season.

The Buccaneers (1-1) will host the New York Giants on Sunday, Oct. 1.

Josh Norman, Washington Redskins cornerback: “It’s not about the flag. We want to be here. This is our country. We were born here. We were bred here. No one is spitting on the flag. We know you gave your life for it. Our gratitude to your service is deeply endeared. But if someone comes on your front porch and take a piss, as a man what are you going to do, sit there and watch him pee or step outside and be like, ‘Hey what are you doing, sir? You’re on private property you got to get off or we’ll make you get off.’ … When a president acts like that, that’s not someone who stands for dignity, pride, respect, honor. Where’s the honor.

Terrell Suggs, Baltimore Ravens linebacker: “Personally, I think the comments made about my brothers decided to protest and kneel is kind of what made us no longer be silent. We stand with our brothers. They have the right to protest. We knelt with them today. Non-violent protest is as American as it gets. We knelt with them today and let them know we are a unified front. There is no dividing us. I guess we’re all ‘sons of bitches.'” Suggs was one of 10 Ravens players to kneel during the anthem.a (23)

Chiefs to consider Alex Smith offers after season, report says

Alex Smith could soon be on his way out of Kansas City.

The Chiefs are expected to consider trade offers for the veteran quarterback after the conclusion of this season, ESPN reported, citing unidentified league sources.

It would be easy, but wrong, to view this as Jones being vindictive about the NFL’s ongoing legal battle against Cowboys star Ezekiel Elliott. Jones has reportedly been expressing his concerns for months about the terms of the proposed extension. The Cowboys owner apparently is not opposed to Goodell getting an extension, he’s just concerned he makes too much money.

“Jerry’s not saying, ‘Don’t hire Roger.’ He’s saying, ‘I hate this [proposed] deal; redo it,'” one source told ESPN.

Goodell earned $44 million in 2015.

Goodell’s extension, which had been expected to be completed before the season, will be discussed in a conference call this week among committee members.

The members of the NFL’s compensation committee include chairman Arthur Blank of the Falcons, Clark Hunt (Chiefs), Robert Kraft (Patriots), John Mara (Giants), Bob McNair (Texans) and Art Rooney II (Steelers).

I think some guys feel like they’ve got to make choices either way and I think this team has great respect for whatever those are. … I don’t always feel comfortable talking about this stuff.

Camera guy brutally wipes out Chiefs cheerleader

Ouch. A Chiefs cheerleader probably needed some ice after her dance routine.

During halftime of Sunday’s Eagles-Chiefs game, a camera guy ran across the field and right into a dancing cheerleader.

New York Giants, ankle: Beckham did indeed play Monday night, despite being listed as questionable and, most importantly, emerged without a setback. This week, there is far less uncertainty about his status, but his utilization remains in question. Last week, Beckham was on the field for approximately 60 percent of the team’s offensive snaps. He managed four catches for 36 yards. He didn’t look like injury-free Beckham, but he didn’t appear to be severely limited either. He looked about as expected; like an athlete returning from an ankle injury and establishing his confidence in the leg while avoiding routes that would maximally test it.

It’s not clear precisely how many snaps Beckham will see, but it is likely to be an increase over Week 2, as Beckham himself acknowledged. It’s harder, still, to know how close to his preinjury form he’ll be, but the hope is that with another week under his belt, this too will be improved. Clearly, the Giants’ confidence in Beckham’s availability has improved this week; after limited practices on three consecutive days, he was removed from the game status injury report.

Packers vs. Falcons live stream: How to watch ‘Sunday Night Football’ online

The Atlanta Falcons have their big homecoming of the 2017 season, opening up the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium against the Green Bay Packers in a rematch of last year’s NFC Championship. The game will be televised on NBC and streaming online at the NBC Sports app.

These two last met in the playoffs, with the Falcons crushing the Packers on their way to Super Bowl 51. They’re now trying to regroup after a historic collapse in that Super Bowl, with offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan taking the head coaching job in San Francisco. Steve Sarkisian is now in charge of calling the plays.

However, since Bill O’Brien became the head coach of the Texans in 2014, his team has taken that crown. The Browns have had eight different starting quarterbacks in that timeframe. Deshaun Watson will make it nine quarterbacks for the Texans when he starts Thursday night against the Bengals.

That’s quite the bad crop for both teams. In those three seasons, the Browns are 11-37, whereas the Texans are 27-21. The Texans have had the benefit of playing in the AFC South and complementing those mediocre quarterbacks with good defenses, while the Browns have been the Browns.

The Texans traded up to No. 12 overall to draft Watson this offseason, after he led Clemson to its first national championship since 1981. He was a stud in college, and it’s why he was Dan Kadar’s No. 1 quarterback in the 2017 draft:

Despite just 28 all-time meetings in the regular season, a Packers-Falcons game has often been played with eventual postseason implications in the Brett Favre era and beyond. These games also tend to be nail-biters; nine of the last ten regular season meetings were decided by eight points or less, including six by three or fewer points. Much like Green Bay’s non-divisional rivalries that have developed with the likes of San Francisco, Dallas, o (17)and Seattle, fans of both sides are connected by memories of both bitterness and joy.

Buffalo Bills WR Zay Jones’ emotional postgame response strikes a chord

This is the National Football League, where superstar athletes are not supposed to wear their emotions on their sleeves.

These men fly across the football field at breakneck speeds, delivering bone-crunching hits, making acrobatic catches, and engaging in battle in the trenches against super-sized men…all while appearing immune to the troubling thought that each of them is one hit away from a potential career-ending injury.

Until there’s a ruling, Elliott will continue to take the field.

On Wednesday, the NFLPA filed a response to the NFL’s appeal of preliminary injunction. “The Stay Motion fails at the threshold because the NFL faces no threat of irreparable harm if the stay is not granted, while others, including both Elliott and the Cowboys, will suffer substantial — in fact, severe and irreparable—harm,” the NFLPA said.

He took this one 49 yards to the house, as he weaved through the Bengals defense. He even got a nice stiff arm in there too:

The Bengals got the ball back with seconds left. They did their best attempt to complete a Cal-Stanford miracle finish, but J.J. Watt is not as forgiving or helpful as a marching band:

Two years ago, a district court vacated Tom Brady’s Deflategate suspension, but a higher court reinstated it on appeal. Still, the time it took meant that Brady was able to be on the field for the entire 2015 season.

Unless the appeals court overturns the lower court’s ruling, Elliott will remain eligible to play at least until the lawsuit is settled. If the injunction is overturned, Elliott’s six-game suspension will begin immediately.
