Ten Things I Think I Think: An All-Time Quarterback Debate; Week 8 Notes

I think I’ve got one more thing for your to-do list this fall: Get “Football’s Greatest,” the revised and updated version of this 2012 book by Sports Illustrated editors. I’ll give you a good argument starter: How about the top 10 quarterbacks of all time? 1) Tom Brady; 2) Joe Montana; 3) Peyton Manning; 4) John Unitas; 5) Otto Graham; 6) John Elway; 7) Dan Marino; 8) Brett Favre; 9) Sammy Baugh; 10) Bart Starr.

Robby Anderson, WR, New York Jets (25.5 percent): Anderson has an abundance of speed and has been on a roll of late, posting three straight double-digit games in points per reception scoring. He has a touchdown in back-to-back games and is averaging nearly eight targets per game over his past three outings. With six more teams on a bye this week, Anderson will be on the flex radar as a player who has touchdown/big-play upside.

Griffin, 27, has been more present on social media in recent weeks and said he’s trying to clear up perceptions about himself, saying he’s tired of attacks on his character. Griffin, who spent last season with the Cleveland Browns, also said he learned from his mistakes in Washington.

Johnson said he usually plays golf on the day after each week’s rankings. “It helps me to get out for a while before going back to work for the Thursday night games,” he said.

As far as evaluating teams, he said, “I would guess that everyone has their own personal system and their favorite things to look for in a team. The CFP folks provide the very best in terms of statistics, which I also use to support the choices I make.”

Long is the athletic director and vice chancellor at Arkansas and served as the selection committee chairman in 2014 and 2015. He was a varsity letterman in football and baseball at Ohio Wesleyan.canadiens_396_9895eac3b8ad1853-180x180

John Harbaugh hopeful Joe Flacco will return from concussion protocol by Sunday

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco has a “good chance” of playing Sunday against the Tennessee Titans after suffering a concussion last week, coach John Harbaugh said Monday.

Flacco is not experiencing any concussion-related symptoms right now and has been at the Ravens’ facility every day, Harbaugh said.

“We’re very hopeful for this week, and it will be in the hands of Joe and the doctors to decide what we can do,” Harbaugh said. “We’ll get him ready to play if he can play. That’s all you can really do.”

Harbaugh reiterated his position that Alonso’s hit on Flacco was illegal because the quarterback was defenseless once he slid. The Ravens also have not heard from the league as to whether Alonso will be fined or suspended.

“It’s really not a concern right now in all frankness,” Harbaugh said. “It’s not going to impact our game against the Titans.”

But in the bigger picture, attempting to pass off no-names, has-beens and never-would-be’s was an egregious perversion of the service provider construct. The NFL intentionally put something less than its best product on the field. Of all the objections that fans might have had at the time, never before could they have argued that NFL teams weren’t trying to win.

The decision also damaged the league’s future leverage with players in labor standoffs. The games were so bad that no one could reasonably fear this tactic ever being employed again.

Things finally got going in the second half and the officials weren’t as much of a factor. For that, we’re thankful.

World Champion Warriors Get Their Rings

And, with that, the stage was officially set for tip-off against James Harden and the Rockets. Draymond Green went out in the second half with a knee injury and was missed in a big way. On a positive note, newcomer Nick Young was a scoring machine, hitting eight of nine from the field with six three-pointers. And Jordan Bell had a solid rookie debut as the second man off the bench. In 12 minutes, he scored eight points on 4 of 5 shooting.

Despite an electric atmosphere and a lead that stretched to 17 points, the Warriors fell behind 122–121. Durant hit a last-second shot and the confetti started to fly, but the officials decided it came after the buzzer and waved off the shot.

Durant may have lost the game, but he did pick up his first ring. Overall, it was a special night.

The disaster of a season continues for the New York Giants. They suspended a starting cornerback Tuesday for the second time in three weeks after Janoris Jenkins failed to return from the bye week on time.

Jenkins is suspended indefinitely. He will miss the game Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams.

Jenkins was one of three players that were not at practice Monday. Running back Paul Perkins and Eli Apple were the others. McAdoo said they were excused for personal reasons.

But the Giants had not spoken to Jenkins and he didn’t arrive at the facility until the following day.

“At that point, neither myself nor any of the coaches had heard from Jackrabbit,” McAdoo said. “I did not speak with him directly until Tuesday morning.”blues-012

Bryant doesn’t have regret over the situation but wished he hadn’t been a distraction to his teammates.

“No one thought that, especially with the kind of guys we have and how we work,” Carr said of the losing record, per the team’s official website. “Where do we go from here? We do the same thing that we always do. We work.”

Carr added: “I’m going to make my corrections. I’m going to get better. There won’t be a day when I stop working to be a better version of myself, so I’m going to keep working and I will get better.”

Rookie Mitchell Trubisky had some big-time plays — especially late in the game — but couldn’t carry the Bears past the Saints.
Running backs Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara each ran for touchdowns for New Orleans (5-2). Ingram finished with 99 yards from scrimmage, including 75 on the ground, but his two late fumbles kept the Bears in the game into the final minutes. Kamara had 76 yards from scrimmage — 48 receiving.

The Saints were threatening to score twice in the fourth quarter when the Bears stripped the ball from Ingram. Chicago converted the first fumble into its only touchdown with 3:43 to go on Tarik Cohen’s short dive over a pile of players at the goal line. The second turnover occurred with a little more than two minutes left on the Bears 30, but Chicago was unable to get a first down as rookie Mitchell Trubisky’s fourth-and-1 pass fell incomplete.

Chicago had one more chance to tie after Wil Lutz’s 49-yard field goal with 1:35 left, but an interception by Saints rookie cornerback Marshon Lattimore ended that threat.

Trubisky completed 14 of 32 passes for 164 yards in his fourth start for the Bears (3-5). Chicago’s Jordan Howard had 102 yards rushing on 23 carries.

Odell Beckham Jr. will have surgery this week to repair fracture to his ankle.

“After careful thought, I understand that my word choice was extremely degrading, and disrespectful to women. To be honest, that was not my intention. If you are a person who took offense to what I said, I sincerely apologize to you. I’m a man who tries to be a positive role model in my community, and tries to use my platform to inspire others. I take ownership to everything that comes with that. And what I did was extremely unacceptable. I’m a father to two beautiful daughters, and at their age I try to instill in them that they can be anything that they want to be.

Odell Beckham Jr. will have surgery this week to repair fracture to his ankle. Nothing is scheduled at this time.

The Giants’ training staff brought out the cart, and he was taken off the field in tears. Earlier in the game, the Giants lost receivers Brandon Marshall, Dwayne Harris, and Sterling Shepard. Harris was also placed on IR.

Beckham was going up for a reception when a Chargers defender landed on his left ankle. It was the same ankle that Beckham injured in the preseason against the Browns. Beckham took a helmet to the knee, but his ankle was briefly caught in the turf, causing the initial injury.

Beckham came into Sunday’s game as the second-leading receiver on the team with 205 yards and two touchdown receptions. He had a game-leading 97 yards and a touchdown before he was injured.

The numbers are, honestly, downright remarkable. The New Orleans run defense hasn’t been anything to write home about; it ranks 31st in rushing average, giving up 5.8 yards per carry, although that mostly comes down to two 30-plus yard runs by Curtis Samuel and Ameer Abdullah, The Saints are giving up a first down on 15.4 percent of the rush attempts they face, which is a far more respectable 22nd.

Ben McAdoo isn’t calling plays for the Giants. Mike Sullivan is.

The Giants are 0-5, and something had to give. Ben McAdoo took that step by handing over play calling responsibilities to offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan.

New York hasn’t been able to get the run game going at all. Coming into Sunday Night Football against the Broncos, the Giants were ranked 31st in the league with just 77.8 yards per game. The Giants averaged just 16.4 points per game, which ranks them near the bottom of the league.

They’re in danger of falling below .500 on Sunday with Cassel at the helm. Since 2012, the 13-year veteran is just 8-18 as a starter. He threw a pair of interceptions and completed just four of his 10 passes in last week’s loss.

However, Week 5’s opponent may not have the firepower to take advantage of the Titans’ misfortune. The Dolphins are 1-2 to start the season and have gotten little from Ryan Tannehill’s replacement Jay Cutler. Miami has thrown for just 182 yards per game, which is inexcusable for a team with weapons like Jarvis Landry, Kenny Stills, and DeVante Parker on the roster.

If Mariota misses more time, he’ll do so against more subpar competition. Tennessee’s next two games are against Indianapolis and Cleveland, two teams with just one win between them.

At linebacker, Alex Anzalone was targeted and exploited so badly by the Patriots that it seemed like a good idea for the rookie to cut his flowing blond hair at halftime and blend in with the rest of the roster. (Love it while you can, Alex.) Anzalone took regular reps in Week 3, but he suffered a shoulder injury against the Dolphins that ended his season. The Saints have replaced him with veteran Craig Robertson, who lines up as the de facto starter alongside every-down player A.J. Klein. Robertson took only 24.1 percent of the defensive snaps through Week 2, but that’s up to 58.6 percent since.falcons_028

Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston left Sunday’s loss to the Cardinals after suffering a shoulder injury in the first quarter.

Over their last 14 games on the road against teams with winning records, the Giants are 2-12 SU and 3-10-1 ATS per the OddsShark NFL Database.

Allowing only 260.8 total yards per game, the Broncos have the best total defense in the NFL. Denver also ranks seventh in the league in scoring defense, allowing 18.5 points per game.

Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston left Sunday’s loss to the Cardinals after suffering a shoulder injury in the first quarter. After the game, head coach Dirk Koetter said it was too early to speculate on Winston’s availability for next week.
If Winston can’t go, Fitzpatrick would start. On Sunday, Fitzpatrick completed 22 of 32 passes for 290 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. He is currently the only healthy quarterback on the Bucs’ 53-man roster.

The team’s current third quarterback, Ryan Griffin, has been recovering from a sprained AC joint in his shoulder suffered in the preseason, although it has been described as a more severe injury than Winston’s. Griffin has been on injured reserve and is eligible to return to practice this week but can’t play yet. Koetter and general manager Jason Licht have discussed bringing in another quarterback this week to assist.

Together, in a game the Vikings won 34-31, Hester and Peterson combined for just over 47% of the game’s all-purpose yards, and scored five of the game’s eight touchdowns. The shootout that Minnesota won, what Bears QB Brian Griese accomplished, the effect the game had on the season — hardly anyone remembers.

By the time the Bears were prepping for the Vikings in Week 6, they’d already lost as many games (three) as they had in the 2006 regular season. Rex Grossman was a backup without injury for the first time since his rookie year. New starting running back Cedric Benson was averaging 3 yards per carry. The defense had allowed back-to-back 30-point games for the first time since 2002.falcons_021

Chinese fans also seem drawn to the way in which Curry and the Warriors race up and down the court.

“I think it’s our style of play,” Thompson said. “I think they see we do it as a team, we do it as a unit. You got guys like Steph and KD, it’s easy to watch us play all the time. We have such an athletic team as well. We just make the right play, keep it simple. I think Chinese people really appreciate that about us, that we’re very unselfish and all we really care about is winning.”

“The policy and my actions are going to be that if you’re not honoring, standing for the flag in a way that a lot of our fans feel that you should, if that’s not the case, then you won’t play,” Jones said, noting that his stance is “nothing new.” He added, “As far as whether or not I will basically institute or basically do what I said, I just would say that the implication that we’re not respecting the flag … is just not going to be accepted and so I would just ask anybody to look at my record relative to what I say I’m going to do and you go from there.”

After advancing near midfield, Pittsburgh’s drive stalls on a Ben Roethlisberger third down incompletion. Kansas City gets the ball back trailing by nine with 9:14 remaining.

After failing to convert on a third-and-3 from the Pittsburgh 5, Kansas City decides to go for it. On the fourth down play, Alex Smith throws a pass toward Demetrius Harris in the end zone. Harris gets his hands on the ball, but Sean Davis manages to break up the play. The Chiefs come away with no points on the drive and turn it over on downs.

The Steelers bring pressure on third down and appear to have an easy sack of Alex Smith. But, he steps up in the pocket and manages to complete a short pass to Kareem Hunt. Hunt turns up-field and brings it all the way to the Steelers 24.

Dusty Baker’s future with Nationals shouldn’t depend on postseason results

After Game 1 of the National League Division Series, when the Cubs beat Washington in a tightrope duel that underscored just how thin the margin is between winning and losing, the local postgame radio show featured caller after caller blaming the manager, Dusty Baker, for not finding a way to win a game in which his team that scored 819 runs in the regular season generated a grand total of two hits and no runs.

“I need that. I need it. That makes me better,” Harden said. “And he’s the same way.”

The Nationals had a base open with Rizzo coming to the plate and pinch runner Leonys Martin on second, but manager Dusty Baker elected to pitch to the slugger with Willson Conteras on-deck. Oliver Perez came in and Rizzo looped his first pitch into shallow left-center, finding a patch of grass between three Washington fielders.

Rizzo stumbled after he took a big turn around first and was tagged out to end the inning, but he didn’t seem to care too much, demanding veneration as the Cubs came out of the dugout for the ninth.

Charles Sullivan, professor of law, Seton Hall University: “Where I think the players have a problem is there’s not really an adverse employment action if they are simply benched. They are still being paid, and I don’t think they necessarily have the right to play in games.”

He plans to make the most of every opportunity, starting Tuesday.tigers_053

For the purpose of this exercise, let’s say the Knicks select eighth again.

When I was about 9 years old, I joined a local bowling league for anyone 18 and under. Needless to say, it would have pointless for my team of fourth graders to attempt to compete with a squad of high-school juniors who frequently flirted with 300 games while we were still learning how to throw the ball down the lane without guttering 90 percent of the time. To counter this, most leagues include a “handicap” to help balance the matchup, based on each bowler’s prior average performance on the season.

That would leave them with $94.5 million in salary — or less than $7 million in cap space.

“We had isolated out a number of players that we were going to go scout and do work on,” Diamondback GM Mike Hazen said last week. “It came together over the course of about a week with Detroit. We set the lineup up how we had envisioned. I think he’s protected [Paul Goldschmidt] quite a bit.”

Part of the lore surrounding the Miami Heat landing LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade as free agents in the summer of 2010 was not only the great recruiting presentation that Pat Riley pulled off in South Beach but also the poor recruiting pitch that Derrick Rose executed on behalf of the Chicago Bulls.

Seven years later, with James, Wade and Rose set to take the court for the first time as teammates on the Cleveland Cavaliers in Tuesday’s preseason game against the Bulls (8 p.m. ET, ESPN), Rose revealed that he did try to lure James, Wade and Bosh to Chicago after all.

The banner went up and the home team came back to win in a thrilling finish. All in all, a perfect night for the Nashville Predators and their fans.

Filip Forsberg scored his second goal with 35.6 seconds left and the Predators rallied by scoring twice in the final 1:17 to beat the Philadelphia Flyers 6-5 on Tuesday for their first victory of the season.tigers_056
